Adobe Premiere Pro Downgrader

Free online tool to downgrade new .prproj files to older versions of Premiere Pro

Example: from Adobe Premiere 2026 or 2025 to 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 or even older.

or drag & drop your .prproj file here

Note: Your file will be automatically converted and downloaded after uploading your .prproj file. The downloaded file gets a .downgraded suffix added to its name
for example, yourproject.downgraded.prproj, and your original file is never modified.

Explanation: A Premiere project (.prproj) file is essentially an XML file wrapped in gzip compression. One of its XML nodes contains the version number corresponding to the Premiere version that created it. When opening a file, Premiere checks this number and blocks the file if it was saved with a newer version, even if the structure is largely compatible. This results in the error: “This project was saved in a newer version of Adobe Premiere Pro and cannot be opened in this version.” This tool fixes that automatically by rewriting that version number inside the compressed XML to an older value, so Premiere Pro accepts the file instead of blocking it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with Premiere Pro 2026 project files?

Yes. The tool reads the .prproj file's version metadata regardless of whether it was saved in Premiere Pro 2026, 2025, or 2024, and rewrites it so older versions accept the file.

Which Premiere Pro versions are supported?

Any .prproj saved from Premiere Pro 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, or 2021 can be downgraded to open in older versions, down to CC 2017 and beyond.

Will I lose any effects or features after downgrading?

The downgrade only bypasses the version check. Features the older version doesn't support, such as the Type Tool before CC 2017 or newer 2026 features like Object Masks, may not carry over.

Is my project file uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion happens locally in your browser using JavaScript, so your .prproj file never leaves your computer.

Is this tool free?

Yes, the Premiere Pro Downgrader is completely free to use, with no sign-up required.

What if Premiere still says my project is damaged after downgrading?

On rare projects using brand-new features, open the project in the newer Premiere Pro version, use File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML, then open that XML file in your older Premiere Pro version instead.

What happens when I open the downgraded file in my older Premiere Pro?

You'll see a dialog saying: “This project was saved from a previous version of Adobe Premiere Pro and must be converted. The original project file will not be modified.” Click OK to continue. Your project will open normally.

Should I keep a backup of my original project file?

Yes. To avoid damaging your original project (and prevent the error “The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened”), always keep a backup copy of your original .prproj file before converting.

Does this converter always work?

It works for the vast majority of projects, but we cannot guarantee that every project will function perfectly in older versions of Premiere Pro. This tool only changes the internal version number in the gzip-compressed XML structure of the .prproj file. Some features, such as the Type Tool, may not be compatible with older versions, and edits made with newer tools like the Type Tool will be lost in CC 2017 and earlier, as they do not support these features.
