Some Windows updates can cause serious issues, including:

  • Black screen on startup

  • Boot failure (PC won’t load Windows)

  • GPU crashes (NVIDIA & AMD)

  • Reduced performance or system instability

In this complete recovery guide, you’ll learn how to uninstall a bad Windows 11 update using 3 proven methods, depending on whether your PC still boots or not.

This guide works both before and after a black screen happens.

Problematic Windows Update (KB5074109)

A recent Windows 11 update (KB5074109) has been reported to:

  • Cause black screens on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs

  • Reduce gaming performance

  • Trigger system crashes or boot failure

Microsoft later released KB5074105 to fix the issue, but in many cases the safest solution is to remove the bad update completely.

METHOD 1: Uninstall the Update from Windows (PC Still Boots)

If your computer still starts normally, this is the easiest method.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings

  2. Go to Windows Update

  3. Click Update History

  4. Scroll down and select Uninstall updates

  5. Find the problematic update (example: KB5074109)

  6. Click Uninstall

  7. Restart your PC

🔧 Advanced Method (CMD – No Restart)

If the update does not appear in the list, you can uninstall it manually using Command Prompt.
Command (Run CMD as Administrator):

wusa /uninstall /kb:5074109 /norestart

METHOD 2: Fix Black Screen Using Windows Recovery Mode

If your PC boots to a black screen but you can still access Recovery Mode, use this method.
Steps:

  1. Turn on your PC

  2. Immediately hold the SHIFT key

  3. Keep holding it while the PC starts

  4. You’ll enter Windows Recovery Mode

  5. Go to:

    • Troubleshoot

    • Advanced Options

    • Uninstall Updates

  6. Click Uninstall latest quality update

  7. Confirm and restart

Windows will roll back the problematic update and restore system functionality.

METHOD 3: Fix Total No Boot Using Windows USB (ULTIMATE FIX)

If:

  • Your PC won’t boot at all

  • Recovery Mode is inaccessible

  • Screen stays completely black

This is the ultimate recovery method.
