Does your VW Golf, Passat, Jetta, Audi or Seat shake and idle roughly – especially when the engine is cold? You start the car in the morning, the RPM needle bounces up and down, the whole engine vibrates, and sometimes it even stalls at traffic lights. Then, once the engine warms up (or you switch to LPG), it suddenly runs fine.

This is one of the most common problems on VW group petrol engines — especially the Golf Mk4 / Mk5, Bora, Jetta, Passat, Audi A3/A4 and Seat Leon with the 1.6 SR (AKL) and similar engines. The Symptoms
- Rough, uneven idle — the engine “hunts” for RPM (typically bouncing between ~475 and 700 RPM)
- Strong vibration through the cabin when stopped in gear

1. Replace the Intake Manifold Gaskets (the #1 confirmed fix)
The most-confirmed solution in our community. On these engines there are 8 gaskets in total — 4 upper (intake manifold) and 4 lower (at the cylinder head). When they harden and shrink with age, the engine sucks in unmetered air, the mixture goes lean, and the cold idle falls apart.

Cost: roughly €30–80 in parts, about 2 hours of labour.
Quick DIY test: with the engine idling, carefully spray brake/intake cleaner around the manifold seals — if the idle speed changes, you’ve found your vacuum leak.
2. Clean the Throttle Body and the MAF/MAP Sensor
The most-liked fix in the comments. Carbon build-up inside the throttle body and a dirty airflow sensor confuse the ECU’s idle control.
“I had the exact problem. I used throttle body spray inside the throttle body and also on the MAP sensor, and it fixed it immediately.” — Yusuf G.
Use a dedicated throttle body cleaner for the throttle plate and housing, and a separate MAF sensor cleaner for the sensor element (never touch the wire/element with anything abrasive).
3. Check the Ignition System: Spark Plugs, Wires and Coil Pack
Worn plugs or a weak coil cause misfires that feel identical to this idle problem. Replace the spark plugs (and HT leads if they’re original), and inspect every coil connector. One owner discovered the previous mechanic had left an entire cylinder unplugged — reconnecting it cured the shake instantly. Another fixed it with a full tune-up at 189,000 km.
4. Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
A classic and very cheap culprit for cold-only problems. A faulty ECT sensor reports wrong temperatures to the ECU, which then miscalculates the cold-start fuel mixture. The part costs just a few euros and takes about 10 minutes to change. Several owners confirmed this alone solved their morning rough idle.
5. Inspect the Vacuum Hoses
Check the hose coming from the brake booster and all the air hoses running near the top of the oil filter housing. These crack with age and create the same lean-mixture symptoms as bad manifold gaskets. While you’re there, also check the PCV valve.
6. Running on LPG? Check These Too
- Catalytic converter and lambda sensor: LPG burns hotter than petrol, and over time the higher exhaust temperature can damage the cat and the O2 sensor. Some owners resolved it by fitting a metallic cat.
- Relay 409: a known weak point — cheap and easy to swap.
- LPG injectors: slow injectors can’t keep up at idle RPM even though the car drives fine at speed.
- Remember: if the car idles fine on LPG but badly on petrol (or vice versa), compare which components each system actually uses — that alone narrows the diagnosis massively.
7. Other Reported Causes
- Clogged EGR valve — clean or replace it, and clear the metal line with brake cleaner
- Exhaust leak before the O2 sensor — a leak upstream of the lambda skews its readings and ruins the mixture
- Fuel pump and fuel filter — several owners cured stalling and cold-idle issues this way
- Old air filter — replace it while you have the airbox open, it costs almost nothing

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the idle only rough when the engine is cold?
Two usual suspects: a vacuum leak (gaskets/hoses) that seals itself as metal expands with heat, or a faulty coolant temperature sensor feeding the ECU wrong data for the cold-start mixture. Both are covered above — and both are cheap to rule out.
My scanner shows throttle sensor and lambda errors, but clearing them changes nothing. Why?
Those codes are usually consequences, not causes. Unmetered air from a vacuum leak makes the lambda and throttle readings look faulty. Fix the air leak first, then clear the codes and re-run the throttle adaptation.
Do I really need VCDS after cleaning the throttle body?
On most VW group cars of this era, yes — the ECU needs to re-learn the throttle stop positions. Without adaptation the idle can stay rough or even get worse. A basic VCDS/OBDeleven session takes two minutes.
Is it safe to keep driving with this problem?
Short term it usually won’t strand you, but a lean mixture over time can damage the catalytic converter and lambda sensor — turning a €50 repair into a €500 one. Fix it sooner rather than later.
